Vidic: I will be fit for 2013/14

20130806-202636.jpgManchester United center-back Nemanja Vidic has declared he will be fit for the start of the 2013/14 season after playing the full 90 minutes of United’s preseason friendly match against Swedish club AIK. The Serb missed the majority of the 2010/11 and 2012/13 season through injury, but United are hopeful Vidic will reclaim his spot in the heart of their defense this coming season.

Although doubts were still cast about the 31-year-old’s fitness at the end of last season Vidic claims he will be fit for the Red Devil’s opening match of the season away at Swansea City after grabbing 90 minutes of playing time under his belt in United’s 1-1 draw with AIK.

“I am pleased that I have 90 minutes under my belt,” Vidic told MUTV. “It’s a long time since I’ve played a full game. I am pleased with that and I hope that after this game I can pick up my fitness and I will be ready for the beginning of the season.

“It’s frustrating when you don’t get the games. I’ve done some good training but it’s different when you’re playing a match. I got 90 minutes tonight and we have two more games before the start of the league season. Hopefully I can get another 90 minutes before then.”

Vidic paired alongside Rio Ferdinand in a rock-solid center-back duo after moving to Old Trafford in 2006, holding together many clean-sheets for Alex Ferguson’s side during their victorious Premier League campaigns in the 2006/07, 07/08 and 08/09 seasons and Champions League title in 2008. It is doubtful Vidic and Ferdinand can reform the same partnership they had after two years of disarray, but United’s new manager David Moyes can count of them to show some form and leadership next season, with both hopefully fit enough to feature at least 25 times in 2013/14.
