Stewart Downing will follow Andy Carroll to West Ham for £6 million

West Ham United have completed the signing of Stewart Downing from Liverpool for around £6 million with the English winger signing a four-year deal at Upton Park. Downing, who moved to Liverpool in 2011 for £20m, follows former teammate Andy Carroll away from Anfield to West Ham as Sam Allardyce’s fifth acquisition this summer.

Following the 29-year-old’s disappointing first season at Liverpool Downing was told by manager Brendan Rodgers he could leave the club if he wished in December 2012 in order to look for more playing time. Although featuring 45 times in all competitions under Rodgers, largely as a substitute, Downing only scored five goals last season, and with Liverpool’s recent addition Luis Alberto likely to seriously threaten Downing’s spot in Rodgers squad the winger decided it was time to move on.

Speaking of the transfer, Downing said: “I’m very excited. It’s a great opportunity for me being here, it’s a great club and I’m really excited to get going. I’m ready and I’m fit for the first game against Cardiff City [at home]. I’ve played a decent few games for Liverpool in pre-season, so there will be no problems on that front. It’s all happened quickly, but I’m really excited and hoping to play a part on Saturday.”

Downing joins Andy Carroll and Joe Cole as former Liverpool players who have made the switch to West Ham in the past six months, with Liverpool losing around £34 after selling Downing and Carroll to the London-based club for just over £20m. The English international becomes yet another good signing of Allardyce during the transfer window, with Romania captain Razvan Rat, Real Betis goalkeeper Adrian Castillo and Stockport County’s Danny Whitehead joining the Premier League club.
