Willian poised to join Tottenham for £30m

Tottenham Hotspur are poised to break their club transfer-record for the third time this summer as Brazilian midfielder Willian looks set to move to White Hart Lane from Anzhi Makhachkala for £30 million.

Although Liverpool originally were favorites to sign the former Shakhtar Donetsk player after Anzhi listed their entire first team squad up for sale, Tottenham swooped in to scoop up Willian, who they had attempted to sign in January. The 25-year-old is currently undergoing a medical with Andre Villas-Boas side, and is close to becoming Spurs’ fourth major signing of a successful transfer window for the English club.

Willian will follow Nacer Chadli, Spurs’ £7m capture from Twente, Paulinho, who Tottenham paid a club-record fee of £17m, and Roberto Soldado, who Tottenham paid a new club-record of £26m after the signing of Paulinho. Despite Chadli and Soldado both occupying a forward role Willian, who has won two caps for Brazil, is certain a move to London will boost his hopes of sealing a spot in Brazil’s World Cup squad next year. At Shakhtar Willian looked certain to be picked by Luiz Scolari as part of the Selecao’s 23-man squad, but following his disastrous spell at Anzhi he will need a good opening season in the Premier League to claim a place Brazil’s first team.
