MOTD- Manchester United 0-0 Chelsea
Manchester United and Chelsea held out to a draw in a rather boring (who are we kidding, extremely dull) Premier League match at Old Trafford. Although both sides will be happy with the draw, neither side risked losing the match to earn the luxurious three points in the second week of the new season.
Predictably, the game did not start out as a thriller, as David Moyes’ men felt out Jose Mourinho’s side in a tentative opening ten minutes. Chelsea sat back and allowed United to apply mild pressure, but it was The Blues who opened the shot count in the tenth minute when a Rio Ferdinand clearance fell to Oscar on the edge of the United penalty area. The Brazilian snapped a shot on goal, which David De Gea easily stopped to his left. United then managed their first shot with Robin van Persie slamming a high effort into the side netting on the left from eight yards, yet still neither team looked that threatening.
Van Persie headed a Patrice Evra cross over the bar in the twenty-fourth minute, before Rooney slipped a slow shot towards the bottom corner from the edge of the box, which Pert Cech blocked with ease. Chelsea then came close to scoring when Oscar hit an effort straight to De Gea in the forty-third minute, yet it would never have scored.
The match seemed destined to get better in the second half, yet it remained bland as the match rolled on. Eden Hazard sent a screaming shot straight at De Gea from twenty-five yards, but even Chelsea’s youngsters in the United half failed to conjure anything magical. Wayne Rooney then slipped a pass through to Danny Welbeck in the fifty-sixth minute, only for the English international to scoop a curling effort over from twelve yards out.
Gary Cahill tried his luck from thirty-five yards in the fifty-ninth minute, but De Gea comftorably saved his drilled shot. Although the match became more stretched neither Mourinho or Moyes’ boys could make many real chances, with the next of which seeing Rooney having his low shot pushed wide by Cech. Evra watched his fierce volley from the edge of the box flash wide in the eighty-sixth minute, but United needed Moyesie time for a winner to come. Sadly for the Red Devils, (and most fans looking for at least some excitement), United could not conjure anything and after three minutes of added time the match ended 0-0.
