MOTD- Arsenal 2-0 Fenerbahce (5-0 agg)

By on August 27, 2013

An Aaron Ramsey double helped Arsenal qualify for the Champions League with a 2-0 (5-0 aggregate) win over Fenerbahce, healing the remaining wounds The Gunners carried following their disastrous 3-1 loss to Aston Villa on the opening Premier League. Although Arsene Wenger will still need to bring in some new players if a top four Premier League finish is in the offing this season, his side showed strength in keeping a frenetic Fenerbahce at bay at the Emirates.

The opening minutes were end-to-end stuff, but Arsenal took advantage of their counter-attacks and Theo Walcott came close to putting the home side in front after only thirteen minutes when he burst through the Fenerbahce defense. The Englishman struck his first time shot straight into the hand of Fenerbahce goalkeeper Demirel, yet it took only ten more minutes before Wenger’s side took the lead. Lukas Podolski slipped Walcott through on goal, and the winger tapped it to Ramsey who dinked under the oncoming Demirel into the back of the open net from six yards.

Even though Arsenal’s attack looked strong after the goal, their defense was shaky, and it allowed Bruno Alves to rifle a long-range shot just wide of the top corner in the thirty-fifth minute.

As the match rolled on to the second half the pace of the game became much slower, but Fenerbahce maintained their attacking threat, with Sow whacking a shot over the bar in the sixty-fourth minute. But Arsenal managed to grab a second in the seventy-third minute when Kieran Gibbs sent a low cross into the box from the left, which Ramsey beautifully directed into past Demirel into the back of the net.

Fenerbahce tried to retaliate, with Alves thumping a free-kick straight at Arsenal goalkeeper Szczesny in the seventy-eight minute, but they could not find even a consolation goal as the match ended 2-0 after two minutes of added time.
