Manchester City close to completing £3.5m Martin Demichelis deal
Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is close to reuniting with Martin Demichelis as The Sky Blues near the £3.5m signing of the center-defender from Atletico Madrid. Demichelis, who played under Pellegrini at Malaga and River Plate, only arrived at the Vincent Caldron earlier this summer after being released by Malaga at the end of the 2012/13 season yet once Atletico find a replacement he is set to join City.
The English club’s central defense has been suffering from the injuries of Vincent Kompany, Matija Nastasic and Micah Richards, which was shown in their 3-2 loss to Cardiff City last weekend, so Pellegrini will be hoping to complete the signing before City’s Premier League match against Hull City on Saturday. Although Kompany is scheduled to return to fitness within the next month, Demichelis will be competing with the Belgian for a starting position after his successful spell under Pellegrini.
The 32-year-old was an essential part of Malaga’s side during his 84 appearances for the club from 2011 to 2013, helping the club avoid relegation before guiding them through their first ever Champions League campaign last season. Demichelis also provided sturdy defending during his seven-year Bayern Munich career during the mid-2000’s, in which he featured 174 times and won four Bundesliga trophies. The Argentine has made 37 caps for his country since making his international debut in 2005 and played in all of Argentina’s 2010 World Cup matches.
