MOTD- England 4-0 Moldova

By on September 6, 2013

England easily brushed aside an inferior Moldova at Wembley to line the Three Lions up for a key World Cup qualifier against Ukraine. Danny Welbeck bagged two goals while Ricky Lambert added a second to his tally of England goals, and it took only eleven minutes after the opening whistle for Engand to take the lead.

Frank Lampard squared it to, guess who, Steven Gerrard on the edge of the box for the veteran midfielder to drive a low effort into the corner. Lambert then added to Roy Hodgson’s side’s momentum as he slammed a header into the far corner of the net in the twenty-sixth minute, but things took a nasty turn for England just before the half when Welbeck was booked, meaning he will miss the crucial qualifier against Ukraine.

The Manchester United forward made up for it only seconds later, when Lambert sent him through on goal and he rounded the Moldova goalkeeper before tapping it into the empty net. The pair combined again in the forty-sixth minute, with Lambert playing a short pass through to Welbeck from the right, and Welback scooping the ball over oncoming the keeper into the back of the net. Lampard had his twenty-five yard effort save and although England could not produce another goal the Three Lions saw out what was, and was expected to be, a comftorably win.
