Manchester City signing Martin Demichelis ruled out for six weeks

Demichelis is expected to be ruled out until mid-October after suffering the knee injury in training, but City have opted not to sign a replacement on a free transfer.

The Argentine international, who joined City on Sunday for £4.2 million from Atletico Madrid on Sunday, will not need surgery, but City are left with only Joleon Lescott and Matija Nastasic to marshall their defense until Kompany, Demichelis, and Micah Richards return. Richards is set to be back in action soon and Kompany could return within a few weeks, whereas Demichelis will be hoping to return for City’s Champions League Group Stage match against Bayern Munich in early October, but is set to miss City’s travels to Stoke City, Viktoria PLzen, and Aston Villa, and will also be out for September 22nd’s Manchester derby (you can just picture David Moyes and his boy’s voices heartily laughing while speeding away from, City’s training ground.)

Demichelis was plucked up by City manager Manuel Pellegrini only a month after moving to Atletico, and was reunited with the Chilean manager after playing under him at Malaga and River Plate. The 32-year-old helped Pellegrini lead Malaga to the quarter-finals in their first ever Champions League campaign, and has made 37 appearances for Argentina. Pellegrini, obviously, brought in the aging Demichelis as a sturdy-back up should one of his starters be out, but the former Bayern Munich players has lots of experience and definitely could have patched together the shaky City defense.
