MOTD- Swasnea City 2-2 Liverpool
Jonjo Shelvey, whether he likes it or not, has his face in all the papers as he played a part in all four goals during Swansea’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool at the Stadium of Light. Swansea’s £5 million summer buy from Liverpool played against the Red’s for the first time since moving to Wales, and proved to be a good acquisition for Michel Laudrup after he drove home a solo goal in the second minute and provided an assist for Michu’s second half equalizer.
Liverpool meanwhile returned to the top of the Premier League table on ten points with Victor Moses scoring on his debut for the club. But things took an dismal turn for Brendan Rodger’s side only 87 seconds into the match when Shelvey received a headed Jordan Henderson clearance. Shelvey whiffed a first-time volley, but regained the ball, whizzed by Mamadou Sakho and had a span-shot blocked by Martin Skrtel before curling a third effort into the top corner from six yards.
Yet celebration turned to doubts for Shelvey on two minutes later, as his soft, stray back-pass zipped straight to Daniel Sturridge, who curled a one-touch shot into the bottom right corner from eight yards out. Riding on their equalizing momentum Liverpool pressured Swansea, although the English club nearly went down again when Wilfred Bony had his long-range shot awkwardly blocked by Red’s goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.
Henderson had his point-blank range header fantastically saved by Michel Vorm in the twenty-sixth minute following great work from Moses down the left flank, before Liverpool grabbed the lead through Moses in the thirty-sixth minute. The former Chelsea winger flew down the left after receiving a horrible Shelvey pass and cut inside, whizzing past two Liverpool defenders before smashing a low shot from the edge of the box past Vorm in the bottom corner.
But Swansea began to find their rhythm again as the match rolled on to the second half, and the Swans found an equalizer in the sixty-fourth minute through Michu. Angel Rangel’s chipped long ball found Shelvey on the edge of the Liverpool box and the young midfielder flicked a first-time header on to Michu, who while under pressure coolly buried a shot into the bottom right corner of the net. Shelvey then started to look better, but he couldn’t gift either side another goal as the match ended 2-2.
