Paolo Di Canio sacked as Sunderland manager
Paolo Di Canio basically wrote his own resignation as he got in a row with his side during training, which has gotten him fired from his position as Sunderland manager. Di Canio, who shot his feelings out at the Sunderland squad during training, has lead his side into one of their worst starts to the season ever, only managing one point out of their first five Premier League matches. Although he began his career at the Stadium of Light on a high note, steering Sunderland to a mid-table finish in the Premier League last season, a disastrous summer and a wretched start to the season was enough to get him fired.
“Sunderland AFC confirms that it has parted company with head coach Paolo Di Canio this evening,” read a club statement. “Kevin Ball will take charge of the squad ahead of Tuesday night’s Capital One Cup game against Peterborough and an announcement will be made in due course regarding a permanent successor. The club would like to place on record its thanks to Paolo and his staff and wishes them well for the future.”
Tensions had been running high in the Sunderland dressing room, and following the Black Cat’s 3-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion Lee Cattermole who Di Canio stripped of captaincy, criticized his manager, and once word of the rift got to the English side’s owner Ellis Short, he drew the line. But whomever Short replaces Di Canio with will have one heck of a time revitalizing a side with a shattered morale sitting bottom of the Premier League table.
