Thomas Muller slots past Joe Hart to score Bayern Munich’s second goal of the night

Bayern Munich once again proved their power as Manchester City crumbled in front of Pep Guardiola’s men at the Etihad Stadium.  A particularly forgettable performance from City goalkeeper Joe Hart saw City go down three goals before scoring in one of their worst defeats in Manchester.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side got of to a bad start, with Hart slipping up to allow Bayern the lead in the seventh minute when Franck Ribery cut in from the left and sliced a dipping low shot towards the near post.  Although Hart should have stopped it the English international flapped at it, leaving it in the back of the net.  Things only got worse for the home side as Bayern pressed with attacking football, with the European champions doubling their lead just four minutes into the second half.  Dante chipped a long ball down the middle towards a completely free Thomas Muller, who brought it down before rounding Hart and tapping it into the back of the empty net from six yards.

Guardiola’s side added a third only three minutes later when Toni Kroos slipped it into Arjen Robben, who ghosted by Matija Nastasić.  The winger slammed it into the near corner of the net from eight yards out, and the German side should have been 4-0 up in the seventy-seventh minute when Muller blasted a shot onto the crossbar.  Yet City grabbed a late consolation goal as David Silva cut it back to Alvaro Negredo from the right.  Negredo turned with the ball and curled a wonderful effort into the top corner, making for some tense final moments.  Only to add to Bayern’s worries Jerome Boateng got himself sent off when Jan Kirchhof missed a clearance, leaving Yaya Toure through on goal.  But Boateng sliced the midfielder down from behind and saw red, a moment that looked pivotal when Silva curled the resulting free-kick onto the bar from the edge of the box.  Despite increased pressure from City in the two minutes of added time Bayern managed to hold on to the win, which sent them top of Group D.
