MOTD- Tottenham Hotspur 0-3 West Ham United
An inspired West Ham United used Spain’s European Championship winning 4-6-0 formation to stun Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane. Although Sam Alladryce’s side had failed to score an away goal prior to this London derby, three second half goals from West Ham gave the underdogs an astounding victory.
It was a rather strange game, with a less than exciting first half teeing up a thrilling second, but West Ham fans will not care the slightest bit, as their idols even began the sluggish start to the match on top. Keeping possession and forcing men behind the ball when Tottenham had it, West Ham only capitalized on their unusual tactics for such a tough match in the eleventh minute when Stuart Downing clipped a cross in from the right, which Kevin Nolan headed wide of the far post.
Tottenham pushed forward as they felt their way into the match, and slowly found themselves in control. Andros Townsend nearly put Spurs in front in the twenty-first minute when he cut inside from the right before slamming a long range shot inches over the bar, and crafting Andre Villas-Boas’ side’s next chance ten minutes later. The wing-back scurried down the right and squared it to Paulinho, who skewered a volley from the edge of the box just wide. But West Ham came close to opening the scoring moments before the end of the first half as Mark Noble curled a dangerous-looking free-kick to Nolan, who had peeled of the wall. The midfielder volleyed it on the turn only to see his effort zip by the far post, yet Spurs found their mojo as the match rolled on to the second half.
Jermaine Defoe blasted a shot straight at Jaaskelainen on the break, only to see his side go down in the sixty-sixth minute when Downing’s corner from the right found Winston Reid at the far post. Reid’s towering header was blocked by Nolan, but the rebound bounced back down to the center-back, who tapped it past Hugo Lloris into the back of the net. It only got worse for Tottenham as West Ham pushed forward, with the Hammers doubling their lead only five minutes later. Noble slipped Ricardo Vaz Te in on goal down the middle and Vaz Te saw his original shot blocked by an oncoming Lloris from six yards, yet luck was on his side as the rebounded bounced back off the forward into the back of the open net.
Although 2-0 would have been a great result for Allardcye’s side, Ravel Morrison put the icing on the cake in the seventy-second minute via a fantastic goal. The starlet received the ball near the halfway line before sprinting towards goal, and after bamboozling Michael Dawson and outmuscling Jan Vertonghen, Morrison dinked it over an outrushing Lloris into the back of the net. Tottenham attempted to muster up what would have been a fabulous come back, but the home side had lost all of their spunk since Reid’s opener, allowing West Ham to see out the 3-0 win to take themselves out of the relegation zone.
