MOTD- Sheriff Tiraspol 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur

By on October 24, 2013

Jermain Defoe was heaped with praise after he equalled Martin Chivers’ club record of twenty-two European goals during Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League. Defoe’s winner nearly made the 2,742 round trip to the communist state of Transnistria, which is yet to be recognized by sovereign country and is considered part of Moldova, worthwhile, with the win keeping Tottenham at the top of Europa League Group K.

Yet it was not the walk in the park the was expected for Tottenham, with Sheriff impressing the home crowd at the Stadionul Sheriff. Although Tottenham grabbed an early lead as Jan Vertonghen headed Christian Eriksen’s cross into the top corner to put the visitors in front in the twelfth minute, Vlad Chiriches was forced to make a stunning goal-line clearance to keep Henrique Luvannor’s tap in away from goal moments later.

Cadu, Ismail Isa and Richardinho all came close for the hosts, but Defoe nearly doubled Tottenham’s lead in the sixty-seventh minute when his twenty-yard shot struck the post. Yet the English forward struck home his twenty-second goal in European competitions with fifteen minutes remaining to give Tottenham the win.
