The English Football Association has confirmed that both Danny Welbeck and Michael Carrick have withdrawn from the England squad because of injury.
Carrick will spend a lengthily time on the sidelines, reported to be up to six weeks, after suffering an Achilles tendon problem during Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday.  Although the midfielder played all 90 minutes of the match he will not be able to take place in England’s friendlies against Chile on Friday and Germany on Tuesday despite the 32-year-old having received injections to minimize inflammation.  The injury could mean the midfielder, who has played a big role in United’s Premier League campaign so far, outshining Tom Cleverly, Anderson and new signing Marouane Fellaini to win the staring spot, has played his last match of 2013 after David Moyes granted Carrick leave to rest the injury.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder’s Manchester United team-mate Welbeck has been out for nearly a month with a knee-injury and has shown no signs of returning for United’s visit to Cardiff City in ten days, much less England’s friendlies.  Welbeck has scored eight goals in his twenty caps for England, while Carrick is yet to score for England despite having won thirty-one caps for The Three Lions since making his international debut in 2001.  Yet Carrick is set to be rewarded with a new two year contract by United, who are keen to hold on to the midfielder despite his age.
