Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge could be facing a lengthily spell on the sidelines after suffering suspected ligament damage to his right ankle during training.

Sturridge left Liverpool training ground Melwood on crutches as manager Brendan Rodgers checked “where all the players are at” fitness wise during a training session on Friday.  The Englishman was immediately subject to a scan, and although results of the test are yet to become clear, the former Chelsea player is expected to be out for up to six weeks.  The injury is possibly a recurrence of the ankle ligament damage that kept Sturridge out for three months last spring and could need a personal fitness program, to which Sturridge was subject after enduring the ankle injury in May, if the forward is to recover before the end of the year.

Liverpool had previously been fretting over a thigh injury that kept Sturridge out of Rodgers’ stating eleven in last weekend’s Merseyside derby, but Rodgers dismissed fears over the injury aggravated during England’s friendly with Germany.

“We had a good chat this week of where he is at fitness-wise and I just felt last weekend he wasn’t fit enough to go into a game of that magnitude,” Rodgers said.  “He came on and got the point for us and he has had a really good week in training, up until now.”

The injury is a huge blow to Liverpool’s top four hopes after the forward began the season on incredible form, having scored eleven goals in just thirteen appearances for Liverpool so far this season.  Sturridge is the second top scorer in the Premier League and could keep Liverpool in second place , which would be their best league finish since 2009, if he remains in his form after recovering.  However as Rodgers pointed out Liverpool will always be able to restock in the January transfer window if Sturridge drops out of form. “Last year the couple of players we got in January was great and gave us a great boost,” Rodger said.  “It would be brilliant if we could do that again, but it’s about what’s available and affordable.

“I would love to have that boost because that injection of quality can set you up for the second half of the season. If something comes up to make us better, we will do that, but we do not want to be just adding to the squad. It has to be someone who comes in to make us better.

“If that becomes a possibility, the owners have shown they will support that.”
