Luis Suarez has put pen to paper on a new four-and-a-half-year contract at Liverpool.

Luis Suarez has become Liverpool’s highest paid player ever by putting pen to paper on a contract extension worth £40 million that has squashed rumors of the forward moving in the near future. Contract negotiations between Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre and Suarez’s agent Pere Guardiola quickly ended with an agreement that has Suarez’s weekly wage increased £60,000 from £120,000 to £180,000-a-week in the four-and-a-half-year deal.

Liverpool will be glad that the deal was signed quickly without fuss after a massive transfer saga surrounding the Uruguayan’s future at Anfield over the summer, which halted when Arsenal’s £40 million and one pound bid failed to activate a non-existent clause in Suarez’s previous contract that had two-and-a-half years remaining on it. Yet the Premier League club denied that the contract was signed in order to raise Suarez’s market value in the near future.

The former Champions League winners confirmed a clause in the contract ensured Suarez could not sign for another English club without their consent, but refused to comment on whether a get-out clause which would allow Suarez to leave Liverpool if they failed to qualify for the Champions League.

However, with Suarez in stunning form and atop the Premier League scoring charts Liverpool are well on their way to their first taste of the Champions League since 2010, sitting in second in the league. Suarez has also contributed masses to this effort, having bagged 17 goals in just 11 league appearances so far this season, and said his massive Liverpool fan backing helped him make the decision to sign the contract.

“It’s nice because when you extend your contract, you extend it because you want to stay here for the future,” the 26-year-old said. “I signed not only for two-and-a-half more years, but I signed for a long time to stay here and I am so happy. When you are happy, you try everything for the best for the future. I spoke a lot with my family because my family are very important to me and they are happy here. We spoke over the last few weeks with the club and everything is OK. I don’t have a problem; the club don’t have a problem, so it’s very good.”

Suarez also spoke to the club’s official website saying: “I am delighted to have agreed a new deal with Liverpool and have my future secured for the long term.

“We have some great players and the team is growing and improving all the time. I believe I can achieve the ambitions of winning trophies and playing at the very highest level with Liverpool. My aim is to help get us there as quickly as possible.

“Without doubt the backing I have received from the Liverpool fans has influenced my decision. I am so proud to represent them and go out to do my best for them every time I pull on the shirt.

“We have a special relationship; they have love for me and in return I love them back. I will always do my best for them and hopefully we can achieve success together.”
