Ronaldinho signs new Mineiro contract

Former FIFA World Player of the Year Ronaldinho has shut down speculation of a move to Turkey by signing a new contract with Copa Libertadores winners Atletico Mineiro.  The 33-year-old former Barcelona forward had reportedly been in talks with Turkish giants Besiktas, but Mineiro president Alexandre Kalil confirmed Ronaldinho has renewed his contract at the Estadio Independencia in a bid to earn a place in the Brazil squad at this summer’s World Cup in his home country.

“The fans can be annoying but Ronaldinho loves them, he has renewed his contract,” Kalil wrote on Twitter.

Ronaldinho has won 97 caps from the Brazilian national team since making his international debut in 1999, and was a part of their World Cup winning squad in 2002.  Although the former AC Milan player has not appeared for his country in a little under a year, he is still hopeful of being part of Luiz Scolari’s Brazil side this summer after proving his class during Mineiro’s Club World Cup campaign in Morocco last December.
