Chelsea sign Basel starlet Mohamed Salah

By on January 23, 2014

Chelsea have announced the signing of Egyptian starlet Mohamed Salah from Swiss club FC Basel to make up for the potential loss of Juan Mata to Manchester United later in the transfer window.

Although the signing of the 21-year-old is still subject to an agreement of personal terms and a medical, Chelsea announced the deal in a statement on their official website, reading: “Chelsea Football Club can confirm an agreement has been reached with FC Basel for the transfer of their 21-year-old attacking midfielder Mohamed Salah.

“The move is subject to the Egyptian international agreeing personal terms and completing a medical examination.”

The 21-year-old winger has stared for Basel since moving to the club from Egypt in 2012 and not only appeared in the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League final against Chelsea but scored against his future employers.  It was not the only time Salah has scored against Chelsea either as he netted a goal in each of the two club’s Champions League group stage meetings earlier this season.  With all of his promise Chelsea weren’t the only club to attempt to sign the starlet, and in the end The Blues only just snatched the Egyptian international right out of the open jaws of Liverpool, who now are likely not to sign a single player during the transfer window.

When asked what the possibility of bringing in any new signings during the January transfer window with a little over a week left in the window, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said: “Nothing as of yet. There have obviously been targets that we have looked at, but there’s nothing imminent.”
