MOTD- Atletico Madrid 0-2 Real Madrid (agg 0-5)

By on February 11, 2014

Real Madrid came into the second leg of the Copa del Rey tie with Atletico Madrid expecting to ease through to the final, and despite the anger of the Atletico fans, did exactly that. It wasn’t as if Real completely dominated, but after Cristiano Ronaldo converted two early penalties, Carlo Ancelotti’s side could have walked the rest of the match and there would be no difference, except for the fact that Iker Casillas would almost certainly not have kept a coveted clean sheet.

Casillas one nearly hold onto one anyhow, as Atletico began strongly in hope of finding an early goal to get them off to the races.  However, luck wasn’t on their side and as Manquillo’s legs got tangled in Ronaldo’s just five minutes in the referee awarded a more or less straightforward penalty, whcih Ronaldo slammed into the bottom corner.  But Atletico weren’t dishearten yet, with Raul Garcia coming inches away from equalizing as he curled a stunning shot onto the left hand post after collecting a loose ball on the edge of the D. Yet Once again they found themselves unlikely, with the referee awarding another penalty to the visitors when Emiliano Insua tripped up Gareth Bale on the right side of the box.  Ronaldo again slammed the ball home in the bottom left corner, to basically put the match and tie to bed, being up 5-0 on aggregate.

Madrid just played keep away for the remainder of the half, with the biggest flashpoint left in the match coming as a lighter hit Ronaldo on the head as he was leaving the pitch just after the halftime whistle.  Who dare hit the king!? Yet the king would be fine following some medical attention, and even got to feature in a rather dull second half in which the biggest chance came as Atletico goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia just managed to turn Bale’s dipping twenty-five yard effort around the post right after the hour mark.  The  scoreline stayed the same though, with Real seeing out their second straight win in the Madrid derby.
Man of the Match: Cristiano Ronaldo.
