MOTD- Galatasaray 1-1 Chelsea

By on February 26, 2014

It could have gone worse for both sides, it could have gone better for both sides. Chelsea will feel in control coming home for the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie, while Galatasaray are set to walk into the same match with a sense of hope. However, Chelsea wasted a hatful of chances which would have given them an asserting lead in the tie, as did Galatasaray. In short, it proves that either side, whichever one moves on to the next round of the Champions League, should have a tough time progressing in the competition.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho had publicly stated that very fact, but just nine minutes into the match that looked to be a false statement as Fernando Torres tapped Cesar Azpiliqueta’s cut back from the left into the back of the net, which was left vacated by Fernando Muslera, who had stupidly charged towards Azpiliqueta.   The visitors in Turkey continued to dominate, but once Roberto Mancini made Galatasaray’s first change of the match only thirty minutes in the home side became the ones pushing forward.

Alex Telles had his low effort from twenty-five yards barely turned around the post by Petr Cech, and Galatasaray’s attacking menace kept up in the early stages second half with Selcuk Inan nearly poking Didier Drogba’s knock-down from around the penalty spot.  Inan’s effort hit the outside of the post, but Mancini’s side finally grabbed their equalizer in the sixty-third minute when Aurelian Chedjou volleyed home a corner to keep the tie square coming into the return leg in London.
