Manchester United ‘Class of 92’ to buy Salford City FC

Manchester United’s famous ‘Class of ’92” have completed nearly a month of negotiations with a deal to purchase English non-league club Salford City FC. The group, consisting of United legends Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, but lacking the biggest name in David Beckham, were originally touted to purchase their former club United in an astonishing move, only to settle for the eight-tier Salford.

The take-over will take place over the summer, with an official club statement reading: “Salford is close to all their hearts. Manchester United nurtured and developed them but Salford is where it all began so, when the opportunity arose to acquire Salford City FC, it was one they all wished to pursue.

“They want to put back into the community of Salford and surrounding areas, they want to develop and engage especially at grass roots level.”

The group of current and ex-players, also known as Fergie’s Fledglings, helped United win a total of 37 major titles in the club’s most successful period of history ever, and even featured in a film, the ‘Class of 92’ documenting their incredible journey coming through United’s youth ranks. The players have made 2069 total appearances and counting for United, but could be embarking on the toughest journey yet in buying Salford.

Yet Gary Neville expressed his excitement about the purchase, saying: “I had my first trial for Manchester United in Salford at age 11 and I will never forget how important that was to me,” added Gary Neville. “Salford City FC, to me, represents those early years, the commitment, hunger, enthusiasm, desire and spirit of football and I am very excited about this venture.”

Meanwhile, his long time teammate Paul Scholes also commented on the matter. “We know it will be tough but we will be committed to this from the start and have some very exciting plans going forward,” the 39-year-old said.
