Brazil and Chile among movers in May FIFA World Rankings

By on May 8, 2014

Brazil are back up to their highest position in FIFA’s World Rankings since the summer of 2011, and are among a small group of nations including Chile and Honduras which have moved up in this month’s rankings ahead of this summer’s World Cup.  Luiz Scolari’s side have risen into fourth place in the rankings with a 5-0 win over South Africa earlier this month, moving ahead of Columbia, Uruguay, and Argentina while also bringing an end to their run of over two years of poor rankings; just over a year ago they were ranked as low as 23rd.

Now, though, just a month out from the World Cup this summer the high ranking only adds to the pressure Brazil have to win the competition as hosts of the tournament.  Having recently released their 23-man squad for the competition, the pressure on the players and Scolari is exponentially growing.

But the pressure will also be on those who fell in the rankings to prove their lower positions wrong, although the US were the only team in the World Cup this summer aside from Columbia Uruguay and Argentina who fell in position. Chile, meanwhile, moved up, taking the 13th position from the US, and Honduras rose two positions into thirtieth. The biggest mover of the month, though, was Mauritania, who rose 13 positions into 139th place.

Yet Portugal, Switzerland, and Greece didn’t move at all, remaining in their amazingly high positions of third, eighth, and 10th, respectively. France and Holland also failed to move, remaining at their low rank of 15th and 16th.
