Arsene Wenger set to pen new Arsenal contract

Arsene Wenger has been through thick and thin at Arsenal Football Club.  From becoming the first and only manager to ever lead a team to an undefeated in an entire Premier League season, to seeing the club through an almost unbearable eight year title drought, Wenger has had his fair share of ups and downs.  But finally, after winning the FA Cup final over Hull City and thus ending their trophy drought, Wenger is back on one of his major high points.  In fact, the French manager is expected to pen a new three-year contract at the Emirates worth £24 million in response to their recent success.

While Wenger had refused contract offers from the club repeatedly as his current deal is coming to an end this summer, and speculation that he could resign spread, all rumors have been put to bed; the announcement of the new contract is expected to be released shortly.  However, it is still unknown why the manager had refused to sign a new contract earlier.

Wenger has been at the Emirates for over 17 years, and has managed over 1,000 matches for the club – a record he set against Chelsea last month.  The former AS Monaco manager, who joined the club in 1996 virtually unknown in England, has also won 12 major titles with Arsenal, including three Premier League trophies.  And following his side’s 3-2 win over Hull yesterday, sealing them the FA Cup trophy, Wenger has certainly made himself a legend at the club.

Now, Wenger said, he is hoping to bring Arsenal back to the very top of English football by signing “two or three players” over the summer. Although the manager is not known to be as shrewd in the transfer market as he was a decade ago, having recently made a controversial signing in Yaya Sanogo, with pockets thought to be £60 million deep Wenger could easily outdo his signing of Mesut Ozil last summer; France international Karim Benzema is thought to be on the club’s radar.

However, back-up goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski is one of the players leaving the club this summer, along with full-back Bacary Sagna. The Pole, speaking of his departure, said: “It’s difficult [to leave], for sure. But I think my decision is made purely on playing regularly each week. That’s the main case for me. This club has been fantastic with me. I really love this club. It’s just purely a sporting decision.”
